How We Work

The United Way of Greater Cumberland County’s goal is to create a set of strategies that will position us to bring a high impact on improving the quality of life in Cumberland County. We want to ensure that United Way has the market-place data, internal systems and efficient processes to support the core business elements of the organization today and into the 21st century. Our mission statement is the core of our agency of who, what, when, why and how we do the business of the United Way.

The United Way of Greater Cumberland County strives to achieve the goal set each year. This is done though the various committees we have.

The Resource Development Committee is made up of board members as well as community members to help the campaign perform up to several critical benchmarks such as: amount raised per capita, amount raised per employees, actual increase over five years, and actual increase over 10 years. The Resource Development Committee works closely with the President of United Way to set the goal for the upcoming campaign, develop, implement and evaluate best practices to dramatically increase workplace campaigns through traditional and non-traditional revenue sources. They help increase new account development, establish growth in individual leadership giving and major gift programs, develop an aggressive endowment and planned giving programs.

The Community Building Committee is made up of board members and community members to build a philosophical and comprehensive strategy for community change. The committee works with the Director of Community Impact & Initiatives to focus on the issues of children, families and neighborhoods. Community Building involves themselves with engaging stakeholders in collaborative work for the benefit, remedy and improvement of targeted social, health, and human service issues. They are the core of what the United Way of Greater Cumberland County does and will encompass as a whole enterprise. The Community Building Committee serves as a wide analysis and resource inventory, leads the role in upgrading member agencies to measure outcomes, and establish public and private partnerships and alliances with the community.

The Brand Image Committee, which is also made up of board members and community members plays a pivotal role in the United Way’s effort in meeting our mission. One function is to educate the community in the work of the United Way of Greater Cumberland County. As the public adopts a more positive, humanistic perception of the United Way, we can anticipate an increase in volunteer involvement in the organizations activities, greater community awareness of our mission and goals, which in turn will increase participation in the annual campaign. The Brand Image Committee develops a comprehensive branding plan to support our core business functions, educate the community and craft a positive public image. They are responsible for the media relations, promoting impact and initiatives of the United Way, improving communications with stakeholders, website development, recognition of donors for achievement and quarterly newsletter.

The Funds Distribution Committee is made up of board members as well as community members. This committees is the core of the distribution process of funds to non-profit 501(c)(3) health and human service agencies that service Cumberland County. When a donor invests in their community through the United Way, they expect that we will distribute their donation in a manner that is responsible, rational, fair and impactful. The Funds Distribution evaluates the Cumberland County Needs Assessment that was put together by the Human Services Advisory Council to detect the top human service needs in the community, develop a plan to help meet those needs by writing RFP’s (Request for Proposals), determining the amount for each proposal and inviting all non-profits of health and human services to acquire an RFP for the upcoming funding year. This committee evaluates the completed RFP’s and accepts agencies that will fit into United Way of Greater Cumberland County’s “certification standards” for funding. Proposals are released to the community in early spring to upcoming funding.
